How to Secure Your Home Network

23 Aug 2026 1 min read Priya Nair 431 views

Your home WiFi network is the front door to every device you own — phones, laptops, smart TVs and IoT gadgets. Here are the essential steps to keep it secure.

Start by changing your router's default admin password (not just the WiFi password) — this is the single most-skipped step and the easiest for attackers to exploit. Next, make sure WPA3 (or at least WPA2) encryption is enabled, and disable WPS, which has known vulnerabilities.

Set up a separate guest network for visitors and smart-home devices, keep your router's firmware updated, and consider disabling remote management unless you specifically need it. Finally, review connected devices periodically — if you don't recognise one, it's time to change your password.
